Statement of Values

“Independent Television Service continues to reinvent television and give public television back to the public.” –Daily Variety

Welcome to television’s independent voice. Innovative. Provocative. Real.

ITVS funds, presents and promotes award-winning documentaries and dramas on public television and cable, innovative new media projects on the Web and the Emmy Award-winning weekly series Independent Lens Tuesday nights at 10:00 PM on PBS.

Mission Statement

The Independent Television Service (ITVS) brings to local, national and international audiences high-quality, content-rich programs created by a diverse body of independent producers. ITVS programs take creative risks, explore complex issues, and express points of view seldom seen on commercial or public television. ITVS programming reflects voices and visions of underrepresented communities and addresses the needs of underserved audiences, particularly minorities and children.

Vision

ITVS seeks to expand cultural and global awareness, advance civic participation, and creatively engage audiences as it brings new and diverse voices into the public discourse through programming. ITVS forges alliances and explores new opportunities through emerging technologies that will cultivate new audiences for independent media.

History

ITVS is a miracle of public policy created by media activists, citizens and politicians seeking to foster plurality and diversity in public television. ITVS was established by a historic mandate of Congress to champion independently produced programs that take creative risks, spark public dialogue and serve underserved audiences. Since its inception in 1991, ITVS programs have revitalized the relationship between the public and public television, bringing TV audiences face-to-face with the lives and concerns of their fellow Americans.

ITVS is funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private corporation funded by the American people.
